The end of menstruation or "change of life" defines menopause. Menses stop naturally with the decline of monthly hormonal cycles between 45 and 60 years of age. It may stop earlier in life as a result of illness or the surgical removal of the uterus or both ovaries. All women who go through menopause experience a drop in estrogen. In fact, mainstream medicine indicates that menopause is an estrogen deficiency disease. Largely ignored is the fact that although estrogen levels drop 40 to 60 percent at menopause, progesterone levels can drop to nearly zero! Progesterone has an opposing, or balancing effect on estrogen. When progesterone levels drop to near zero, we have estrogen dominance, which can cause many negative symptoms and conditions. Estrogen dominance does not necessarily mean a woman has too much estrogen; it means that her estrogen levels are not balanced or opposed by the progesterone levels, creating a hormonal imbalance. What can be done for menopausal symptoms? Premarin is currently the most widely (and overly!) prescribed estrogen on the market, and is one of the most profitable drugs for the pharmaceutical industry. It is manufactured from horses' urine and contains 20 forms of estrogen - humans only have 3. Since most menopausal symptoms can be traced to estrogen dominance, supplementing with more estrogen does not make sense. The majority of menopausal problems can be avoided by good nutrition, avoidance of toxins, regular exercise, and proper supplementation with Natural Progesterone Cream. A very small percentage of women may continue to experience hot flashes and vaginal dryness. In these cases supplementing with Estro-All cream, a natural progesterone and phyto-estrogen product, may be needed. The use of natural progesterone is the sensible choice for women in today's industrialized countries. |
