Phyto-hormones are plant compounds that can have hormonal effects. They can be particularly useful because they are able to utilize estrogen receptor sites without the pronounced estrogenic effects associated with other estrogens. In this way they can protect against excess estrogen, whether from the environment or from our body's own estrogen. When the body is not producing enough estrogen (e.g. menopause) they can supplement estrogen deficiencies without the negative side effects of other forms of hormone replacement therapy. There are hundreds of plants that contain phyto-estrogens; some of the more well known include red clover, licorice, Dong quai, soy beans, flaxseed, black cohosh, and alfalfa. Soy products, such as Tofu or sprouted soybeans also offer phyto-estrogen properties. Many of these plants have been used throughout history to safely regulate hormones and control fertility. |
