Thyroid Hormone and Progesterone

Hormone balance involves all our hormones, not just progesterone and estrogen. Thyroid and estrogen have opposing actions as well. Estrogen causes calories to be stored as fat, while thyroid hormone causes fat calories to be turned into energy. It's possible that excess estrogen may inhibit thyroid action in the cells, possibly interfering with the binding of thyroid to its receptor. If this is so, the thyroid would not be able do its job, thereby creating hypo-thyroid symptoms even though normal serum levels of thyroid hormone are present. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and low body temperature. Thyroid hormone also interacts with FSH (the follicle-stimulating hormone). An adequate level of thyroid hormone is needed for successful ovulation.

Progesterone activates estrogen receptor sites. This action allows excess estrogen to be used before it can cause mischief elsewhere in the body. This is how our bodies use progesterone to oppose estrogen and estrogen dominance. Low thyroid hormone indicates poor progesterone usage, which can disrupt menstrual and menopausal cycles. Women with low thyroid hormone tend to have low levels of progesterone in the luteal phase.

Many people with symptoms of hypo-thyroidism experience positive results when supplementing with Natural Progesterone Cream. Hormone balance is the key.
