Why Transdermal Application?

The body does not as readily absorb oral progesterone. When any product is taken orally it must be broken down and absorbed through the intestinal tract. This carries the product into the liver where the majority of it is metabolized and excreted in the bile. This is known as "first pass loss". Because of this the body captures and utilizes only about 10 to 15 percent of the oral dose. Oral doses of progesterone must be greater than transdermal doses in order to have the same biological effects. Large oral doses cause a surge of progesterone that peaks in 1-2 hours and is then followed by a fast decline causing low levels for the rest of the day. These highs and lows of progesterone may actually be confusing to the body and result in a tuned down receptor response.

Transdermal progesterone is absorbed through the skin and into the layer of fat that lies beneath the surface, known as the subcutaneous fat. Natural progesterone is biologically active and when taken transdermally has an immediate effect on the body. It is the only method that increases progesterone levels at a rate that is similar to the natural physiological release of hormone from the ovaries. Women using Natural Progesterone Cream can attest to its absorbency due to the relief (which is often immediate) of estrogen dominance symptoms. Transdermal progesterone maintains stable saliva levels for eight hours or more after application. Two small 1/8 tsp. doses daily, providing a total of 15 to 30 mg per day, will provide hormonal balance through out a 24 hour period.
